STUDIO
Clay Gruber Design is a landscape design practice working across the Northeast. The studio approaches each project through a careful reading of the land, architecture, and the ways a place will be lived in over time.
Our work is grounded in the belief that landscapes are cultivated rather than simply composed. We look to the existing character of a site, its history, ecology, and patterns of use to develop landscapes that feel particular to their setting. Gardens are conceived as enduring frameworks that can accommodate change, mature with time, and become increasingly inseparable from the places they inhabit.
Architecture and construction are integral to how we think about landscape. Buildings are understood as part of the landscape rather than apart from it, and decisions about material, structure, craft, and construction are considered from the beginning of the design process. This understanding allows the studio to work fluidly with architects and builders while maintaining a clear vision for the property as a whole.
The studio works closely with clients, architects, builders, craftspeople, and horticulturalists from the earliest stages of design through construction. We see this collaboration as integral to the work, bringing together the knowledge required to make places that are thoughtful, well built, and enduring.
